American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP):
As firefighters we are often some of the first on scene during
a suicide attempt. We often witness firsthand the devastation this causes to
loved ones. AFSP is the leading national not-for-profit
organization exclusively dedicated to understanding and preventing
suicide through research, education and advocacy, and to reaching out to people with mood disorders and those impacted by
suicide. More information on this charity can be found at www.afsp.org
On September 12, 2010, Sunday
afternoon, Omaha will have it’s 6th annual Out of the
Darkness Community Walk to spread awareness that depression and other mood disorders are physical illnesses that can be successfully
treated. The walk also honors all those who have been lost to death by suicide as a result of their untreated or undertreated
mood disorder. Proceeds from calendar sales will be directed toward the financial goal
of this walk and will be used in equal distribution for suicide prevention education and for
research locally through the NE Chapter of AFSP (www.afsp.org/nebraska) and globally through AFSP national. For further information on participating in the 6th
annual OOTD walk in Omaha and walk coordinator contact information, please see www.outofthedarkness.org Thank you!
